Living with a stoma will be a transformative journey, bringing about changes that may initially seem daunting, esp. if it going to be a permanent one.


However, with the right mindset and a positive outlook, individuals can not only adapt but thrive in their new reality. In this blog, we will explore the adjustments needed in daily life to achieve optimal functional outcomes and discuss ways to maintain motivation through the power of positive thinking.


Understanding Life with a Stoma:


A stoma is a surgically created opening on the abdomen through which the intestine/urinary system is brought out and the waste can exit the body. This life-changing procedure is often performed when the normal bowel or bladder function is compromised due to medical conditions such as colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis.

While the physical changes may be significant, the emotional and psychological impact can be equally profound. Most often than not the patients become socially conscious and develop self imposed isolation.


Adapting to Lifestyle Changes:


1. Self-Care and Hygiene:

- Establishing a meticulous routine for stoma care is crucial. Regularly changing the stoma bag and maintaining good hygiene can prevent skin irritation and infections. A qualified Stoma nurse can help with this journey of adaptation. The phase usually takes about 2-4 weeks.


2. Dietary Adjustments:

- Consult with a healthcare professional to create a personalized stoma - friendly diet. Certain foods may affect the output and consistency of waste and create gassy output, so understanding what works best for your body is essential.


3. Clothing Choices:

- Selecting clothing that provides comfort and easy access to the stoma is important. Many people find high-waisted, loose-fitting clothing to be the most comfortable.


4. Physical Activity:

- Engage in regular physical activity to promote overall health. Consult with your healthcare team to determine suitable exercises, and gradually incorporate them into your routine.


While the body and the digestive system adapts to the change of having a stoma. One must also heal mentally and emotionally to carry the stoma with confidence.

3. Educate Yourself:

- Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine. Meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help manage stress and anxiety, fostering a positive mental state.

- Instead of dwelling on what you cannot do, concentrate on your strengths and the activities you can still enjoy. Embrace a mindset that emphasizes abilities rather than limitations.
